Tech salaries, even entry-level, are higher than average. Aside from pay, remote work will be a benefit available to a significant number of tech workers. This change in the environment might affect the wages people bring home, for better or worse. Even if you don’t have tech skills at the moment, you can cash in on the tech revolution. As a very accessible industry, tech workers come from diverse racial, national, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Will Remote Work Stick?

The idea of being a web developer traveling around in an RV might become a reality. Companies have bounced back and forth remote work over the years; before the pandemic, there was a slew of arguments against the wide acceptance of remote work by large companies. Due to necessity, companies made working from home, well, work. They had to, as it was unsafe to convene in large groups at offices.

Within a few weeks, major tech companies made the bold decision to permanently work from home. Depending on the company, there are different policies. It’s unclear if remote work means work from anywhere or work at home, but in the same region as the office. Companies, and their employees, do a lot of work to build camaraderie, companionship, and teamwork through in-person team building events. Variations of these activities can happen virtually, but they don’t seem to have the same effect.

At the moment, most teams have real-life experience with each other, which may have carried over to remote work, especially when remote work lasted longer than expected. Will remote work be as productive in a year or two when we collaborate with more people we haven’t met at the office? It’s difficult to say.

Benefits Of Remote Work

Working from home can be a blessing if you have the right setup. Complications and conflicts can arise quickly when transitioning to full-time work from home. Most homes aren’t set up for remote work, and not everyone has the space for an office, let alone multiple if you live with other professionals. For the most part, people have adapted well.

Countless memes, TikToks, and Zoom fails sum up the potential joy that work from home can bring. Besides all day kitten cuddles, the lack of commute and a short line at the coffee pot are worth mentioning. Remote is not exclusive to working; Hack Reactor allows students to learn from home to prepare entry-level tech skills.

Drawbacks

Meeting fatigue was an issue before permanent work from home. Meetings have increased, but interestingly, while making fewer personal connections. Watercooler talk and meeting between friends on different teams have reduced in frequency and scope. While this may seem like a positive in the productivity column, it might lower employees’ morale and drive.

The workday is slowly extending too. Reports have indicated that the workday has increased by forty-five minutes. Meetings are starting to happen at increased frequency before and after the typical nine to five workday as adventurers put the ‘remote’ in remote work by relocating to different timezones. Some companies consider location-based pay for workers who remain away from the office when office work resumes, if it does, to pre-pandemic levels.

Will Remote Work Drive Tech Outsourcing?

As companies realize the functionality of remote work, they might use the option to change how they hire. Companies might look for recent graduates of online coding bootcamps who are willing to work for lower wages. If this model works out, companies may attempt to expand this policy to hire remote workers in countries where tech workers are willing to accept lower wages.

There is hope that eventually this model can create a more equitable world driving salaries up in remote or undeveloped areas. While it may seem wages are decreasing in specific markets, this change might be positive for people worldwide. For the time being, it looks like salaries will remain on the higher end. Regardless of your location, you can learn any data science and machine learning at a data science bootcamp.

It will take years to fully realize the effect the coronavirus has had on salaries. The permutations are countless and impossible to predict. It is still a rewarding profession to be in regardless of the salary. Demand for new apps isn’t going to slow down and technology firms will keep salaries high for top talent.
